The Avenue in Autumn

This glorious avenue of elms and beeches
was planted by early residents
over a century ago.
In Winter swirling mists soften
the stark bare limbs;
Spring brings tiny fresh green buds,
then lush foliage and flowers;
Summer - ripening chestnuts;
then in Autumn the glorious reds,
oranges and yellows of leaves
before they fall to a russet carpet
that crackles underfoot.
