Road Conditions
In the Blue Mountains the number of accidents is exacerbated by often adverse and unpredictable weather when visibility can be reduced by heavy rain, snow, fog and mist.
A behaviour of following basic driving tips, such as this one, has the potential to deal with excessive speed in such conditions.
When the data is broken down into contributing factors involving weather and road conditions, in which speed could be a contributing factor, it highlighted that they were responsible for:
Weather Related -44% of total accidents
Road Surface Conditions - 35% of total accidents
This indicates an over representation of number of motor vehicle accidents in the Blue Mountains are attributable to adverse weather conditions and road surface.
When a comparison is made to the annual wet/rain days in the mountains at 131.2 or 37% and with cloudy/overcast days, 149.7 or 42% of days, these contributing factors become alarmingly significant.
